Historical epics are a popular film genre. In fact, examples range from the spectacular Cleopatra (1963) to the critically acclaimed Titanic (1997). Nevertheless, historical fiction does occasionally contain unrealistic elements. That is one of the features of the 1978 film Caravans.

First of all, this film does have an Oscar nomination for its costume design.

Unfortunately, it is a bit awkward to know that “Zakharstan” will never appear on maps (because that country is not even real)!

Finally, please never confuse Hollywood fantasy with historical reality!
