I’ve often made the case that other national cinemas are closing or have closed the gap with Hollywood production values, but surely nearly full-CGI action and survival films set in, say, outer space, are too expensive for even the most polished foreign studios, right?
Well, South Korea’s The Moon aims to prove that wrong, telling the story of a doomed future Korean mission to the Moon that pits its sole surviving astronaut and his resourceful Mission Control against the many deadly dangers outside the Earth’s atmosphere.
A Toast
What will immediately register with you about this film are how great the special effects are- really just seamless in the way the light falls no surfaces both artificial and natural. This is a production that yields no ground to the best technical work in the business right now.
When the story and the effects are working in tandem, the effect is truly spectacular, like a meteor storm sequence that will have you holding your breath. The earthbound scenes are just as well shot and acted, delivering a very polished final product that’s a must-see for fans of the genre in particular.
Beer Two
I’m not sure there’s a need to layer in all the extra melodrama between the astronaut and the grizzled ex-mission control scientist who contributed to his father’s death, but there it is. Also, it’s so long.
Beer Three
This has to be the most cursed space mission ever put to film. Literally whenever you take a breath, some other largely unrelated yet potentially lethal calamity arises (meteors sneak up on you like Ghostface in this thing). Also, it’s soooo long.
Verdict
The Moon is an extremely polished outer space survival story that easily looks as good as the best of its peers, but a bit of a thin story for the runtime.
