Abuse in the Catholic Church is almost always talked about in the context of child abuse, and while that has been prove over and over again to have been rampant, much less attention is paid to priests who sexually abuse grown women- particularly those they have most access to, Nuns.
Nuns vs The Vatican is pretty literally that, although tragically so, as a brave group of nuns stands up against the institution that has defined their hopes and lives, but has let them down when they looked to report their abuse at the hands of the priests they trusted.
A Toast
“When it happens to women, it has never been covered systematically.” Here experts and journalists seek to do just that, providing support about what the Vatican was like back in the times the abuse that is now being reported occurred- times where it was difficult to the point of impossibility to speak up Very, very few nuns have ever spoken up on the record, but some have at great personal cost and continue to do so.
The focus really is on these women and their stories, told bravely in the first person, even when the still teeming pain of what was done to them decades before manifests itself in tics like a hand gripping and releasing the edge of a table as its owner speaks. The monsters they speak of are monstrous indeed. World-recognized artist and priest Marko Rupnik appears to have been a particular psychopath, justifying all manner of depravity with nonsensical readings of scripture. A true wolf in sheep’s clothing.
This is an age-old story of what happens when you give men systemic power over women, and limit their accountability towards their own actions- perhaps the oldest. Even the most respected Popes and officials perpetuate their most basic failing- trying to keep the power to define and administer punishment within the Church. “To the church, sexual violence is a sin, not a crime.” You cannot ignore the fact that it’s always both.

This story is perhaps unavoidably unsatisfying in the end, although a postscript details some of the slight but still significant consequences Rupnik and his reputation is now facing. Here’s hoping it inspires more to stand up and drive the change that is needed.
