Ernest Hemingway wrote some of the greatest American classics. Filmmakers oftentimes like to adapt literary classics into feature films. Unfortunately, not all film adaptations honor the legacies of compelling novels. One of the most (in)famous examples is the 1957 version of A Farewell to Arms.
A Toast!
First of all, this film does feel romantic (to a certain extent). Additionally, Vittorio De Sica earned an Academy Award nomination for his supporting role as Major Alessandro Rinaldi.
Beer Two
Unfortunately, this film does not exactly live up to the original novel. Even Ernest Hemingway himself hated this film.
Beer Three
The film’s 2 hour and 32 minute running time does not help it either.
Beer Four
This film also ended David O. Selznick’s film career (even though he originally achieved fame for producing Gone with the Wind).
Beer Five
Rock Hudson regretted making this film, especially since he lost his chances to appear in both Sayonara (1957) and Ben-Hur (1959) to star in this film.
Verdict
Just because a film is a romantic does not mean it is that great…sigh…
