Moulin Rouge! (2001) remains a beloved motion picture (as of 2020). Starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, that film helped bring back the movie musical. Even though that film is a period drama that incorporated contemporary music, the basic plot is based on a classic French novel. That specific text is La Dame aux Camélias, a novel by Alexandre Dumas fils, and one of its most iconic film adaptations had its title shortened to Camille.
A Toast!
First of all, Greta Garbo definitely deserved her Academy Award nomination for her starring role. Besides that amazing performance, the classic novel comes to life within this film. It is a tale of romance, passion, and most importantly, love. This compelling drama is the result of the brilliance of its director, George Cukor.
Verdict
This film is essentially the Moulin Rouge! of its era within film history.
