Theodore Dreiser remains a seminal American author. His novels include Sister Carrie and An American Tragedy. Both of those novels have formed the basis for feature film adaptations (even though the film titles are different). That is why Carrie is a classic in its own right.
A Toast!
This is one of the best films from director William Wyler. First of all, the production design and costumes capture the historical aspects of Carrie’s narrative in 1890s Chicago. Furthermore, Jennifer Jones offers one of her greatest performances as “Carrie Meeber.” Finally, the film is a compelling romantic drama that reveals the true nature of love in “the big city,” which in this case, is Chicago.
Verdict
The title Sister Carrie implies that the heroine is a nun, but this film truly honors the legacy of Theodore Dreiser’s beautifully written character!
