Having a severe illness can terrify people. It could also make those victims question their willpower to live. Nevertheless, sometimes coping and practicing acceptance is all that a person could do. In fact, Bette Davis earned an Academy Award nomination for playing such a character in Dark Victory.
A Toast!
Nominated for three Academy Awards, this is a compelling classic. Bette Davis definitely deserved her nomination as Judith Traherne. Furthermore, the score that Max Steiner composed for this film adds emotional drama. Finally, this film is just as amazing as other films released during 1939, and joins the ranks of The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind as a true classic.
Verdict
Vivien Leigh might have played Scarlett O’Hara, but Bette Davis is incomparable as a woman who has to meet her own destiny!
