Jane Austen created some of the greatest heroines in literature. Elinor and Marianne Dashwood represented “sense” and “sensibility” respectively. Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice represented the notion of a modern woman. Interestingly, Jane Austen’s personal favorite of her own creations might be the scheming and mischievous “Emma Woodhouse.” The 1996 TV film version truly captures that nefarious creature!
A Toast!
Starring Kate Beckinsale in the eponymous role, this production of Emma is simply dazzling! The production design captures the historical era that Jane Austen had written about in her longest novel. The distinguished cast includes Samantha Morton as “Harriet Smith.” The film itself is a delightfully romantic dramedy. Finally, screenwriter Andrew Davies honors the original novel by miraculously condensing the somewhat complicated plot into a TV film that is less than two hours.
Verdict
Within the original novel, Emma Woodhouse remarks, ““I always deserve the best treatment, because I never put up with any other.” This TV production does give Emma one of the best treatments to ever hit the small screen!
