By definition, gaslight can be dangerous. Nevertheless, the symbolism associated with it makes it compelling. In fact, classic film-noir is (in)famous for its trademark suspense and danger. That is part of the reason why Gaslight is an amazing film!
A Toast!
First of all, this “Best Picture” nominee is more suitable for mature audiences. Despite its dark content, it is still a beautiful film with spectacular production design and cinematography. Besides its black-and-white splendor, the performances from Ingrid Bergman, Charles Boyer, and Angela Lansbury are outstanding. Finally, this compelling crime drama is a brilliant adaptation of the stage play by Patrick Hamilton.
Verdict
Gaslight could result in death, but thankfully, this film is an achievement from director George Cukor.
