When Alex Andy Phuong was thirteen years old, he fell in love with cinema after discovering Turner Classic Movies. One day, Alex tried to watch Gone with the Wind, but did not finish the film because of its lengthy running time. After studying American history as a student, Alex understood the importance of the American Civil War. Olivia de Havilland played “Melanie Hamilton” in that film, and she ironically passed away on Alex’s birthday, July 26, 2020. This is a toast and a tribute to what many consider to be the best film ever made.
A Toast!
Starring Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard, and Olivia de Havilland, this film really is a historical epic! It features one of the greatest love affairs to ever grace the silver screen. The film itself premiered during what could have been the greatest year in film history. Vivien Leigh won an Academy Award for playing the tempestuous Scarlett O’Hara. Olivia de Havilland might have lost the “Best Supporting Actress” Oscar to her own co-star, Hattie McDaniel, but she definitely deserved it every bit as much. Olivia brings a sense of motherly warmth to her role even though Melanie is more frail than the fiery Scarlett. Even though they were character foils, their contrasts added complexity to this compelling romantic drama.
Verdict
The Antebellum society might have been “gone with the wind” (pun intended), but Olivia de Havilland will always be remembered for her cinematic contributions.
