“Juliet” is a popular name partially because of the enduring legacy of William Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy Romeo and Juliet. In fact, many film critics and cinephiles would agree that the 1968 version of that timeless love story is the best film adaptation of that seminal stage play. Before the release of that particular film adaptation, though, an Italian international film received recognition from the Academy. That film is known in English as Juliet of the Spirits.
A Toast!
Nominated for two Academy Awards, this is one of the most lavish and visually stunning films ever made. Even though this film is not in the English language, the film itself proves that film does transcend language barriers. Furthermore, the unique aesthetic of this film is thanks to the bold and beautiful production design and sumptuous costumes from Piero Gherardi. Finally, this film deserved to win the Golden Globe as the “Best Foreign-Language Foreign Film.”
Verdict
Juliet is much more than the name of a Shakespearean heroine because she really is a well-realized person (within this particular film, at least).
