Hollywood royalty oftentimes play real-life royalty. Dame Judi Dench has been known for experiencing a shift in her career towards fame and recognition very late in life. Nevertheless, Dench remains a versatile actress in spite of her age. She might have had to wait decades to earn her first Academy Award nomination, but she definitely deserved it for her leading role in Mrs. Brown.
A Toast!
This is a spectacular period drama from John Madden. Madden and Dench did such great work together in this film that it is no surprise that she would play Queen Elizabeth I in Shakespeare in Love (1998). This film depicts how Queen Victoria formed a friendship with John Brown that subsequently changed an entire empire. This film is a powerful examination of how people really do impact one another.
Verdict
Emily Blunt might have played the “young Victoria,” but Judi Dench definitely deserved her Golden Globe award for playing her majesty, Queen Victoria!
