While the music for the “Matrix” – the new single from Nonviolenz’ debut album Ghost of War – will grab your interest, the lyrics themselves are just a bit of a downer. The high, nasally pitch singing of Nonviolenz just doesn’t blend well with the nice and smooth guitar lickin’ action which is really “Matrix”’s real saving grace.
Maybe the message is lost on me, but with lyrics such as “Where are you within the Matrix? In a tyranny or democracy? Are you a Jew or are you Hindu? Which denomination are you?”, I just feel like I’m being lectured to when I’d rather hear a song for sheer enjoyment. Even emo songs or songs with political messages can still be enjoyable to listen to. The above lyrics just sound like words in a textbook put to music. After four beers, you might enjoy “Matrix”, though I just can’t imagine finding enjoyment in something that’s actually supposed to be complex to understand.
