Clearly inspired by the Beatles and Led Zeppelin, Ruby Topaz’s Rabbit Hole is a collection of tracks that will inspire you to go back to the way back machine. It’s almost a homage to Ruby Topaz’ many musical inspirations, but it sounds fresh and new. One would think the band, all of whom are over 40, are a bunch of new kids trying to get on the block, but the music presented here is also mature, worldly, and clearly written from a point of view of someone who has weathered life’s battles.
A great example of this is “Thanks for Nothing”, as lead singer Mark Bram spills out his soul describing a one-sided relationship, constantly reminding us of his pain, pounding each point with “thanks for nothing”. It’s raw, real pain coming from Bram’s voice that you are almost able to feel.
The lead-off title track “Rabbit Hole” is entirely inspired by The Beatles’ “Love You To”, the beginning using sitar string melodies before adding rock guitar and drums. It really sets the tone for the rest of the album, nicely using modern-age synthesizers and mixing it with its classic rock sound, mostly with great results.
“You’re Still Running” and “Hey, What Are You Doing” are definitely Zeppelin tributes, sampling classic Zeppelin tracks with Jimmy Page-quality guitar sound. Bram’s high-pitched vocals are clearly reminiscent of Robert Plant’s highly energetic screeching vocals which are evident throughout the album.
Two beers and a couple of listens later, you’ll be hooked on this 16-track collection of mostly no misses. Enjoy this very much recommended album.
