Danish high-schooler Fanny is on the cusp of great change, graduating school and moving on to what’s next. She’ll be split from friends for sure, maybe her boyfriend as well, but there’s another inevitability that’s hovering like a stormcloud over her- her mother is very ill.
My Eternal Summer follows Fanny and her mother and father as they simply live their lives to the fullest they can over the course of a summer vacation the likes of which they will never experience again.
A Toast
Sylvia Le Fanu makes the leap to feature filmmaking in this assured and sensitive debut. She’s not creating some great melodrama here, but rather a lifelike one comprised of all of those small moments, arguments, and shared joys that make up our memories of a person and our relationship to them. Both the approach and the performances are remarkably naturalistic without ever losing our attention.
This isn’t a story that is heading for a happy ending, or at least a Hollywood one. As her mother weakens and she sees her father do the best he can to make her comfortable, Fanny does a lot of growing up in a short amount of time. Kaya Toft Loholt, who is actually pretty much the age she his portraying, communicates these seismic shifts in her understanding and perception of the world with fine-drawn and realistic precision.
Beer Two
These are some extremely tolerant modern European parents. Assuredly they do exist, but letting boyfriends sleep over and kids club all night still has to be more of the exception than the rule, no matter how tough things presently are.
Verdict
My Eternal Summer portrays the coming of age of a young girl with a terminally ill mother with subtlety and grace.
