During this entire messed up time I thought it’d be a nice idea to do a six pack of my comfort films. These are films that either I can easily digest, make me feel better, make me happy, or take me to another time in my life like childhood. I got this idea from one of my favorite movie-centric channels on YouTube called Cinefix. Hopefully some of these films will give you some comfort or escape in this time.
Before Sunrise
The first up in my comfort movies is the romantic movie. I had a few choices, but I came to the conclusion that since this is one of my favorite trilogies, then I should pick the most romantic movie out of a trilogy about romance. It’s love at first sight: it’s two people falling in love over one night in Vienna. It’s the fantasy of every person; you meet someone in a foreign land and then fall madly in love. I love the other two films but this one fills my heart with joy and love. Although the ending makes me want to hold my wife tight, at least this leads to two other movies, so you can’t complain too much.
Ottakringer Brauerei AG – Ottakringer Radler Citrus
A perfect Austrian citrus beer for a film that takes place over an evening in Vienna. Radlers are great for those nice evenings you spend outside.
Miracle
The next type of film that brings me comfort is the uplifting drama, generally a sports film. Back in the early 2000’s Disney went on a run of one per year of uplifting sports films and you can kind of take your pick of which one you’d like to watch. My choice is Miracle, the true story about the 1980 Winter Olympics and the US Men’s Hockey team and their battle with the Soviet Union during these Olympic games. If you know the true story, you know this movie will get you pumped. I always put this on when I was sick and it always made me feel better. If you’re looking for some inspiration or a pick me up in these times, then look no further.
Coors Brewing Company – Coors Banquet
How about an ultra-American beer for a Go America movie? In this time some of us may have lost faith in this country, our government, and our people, but let’s go back to a time when we could be proud of our country.
Jurassic Park
Now, this isn’t going to be a good comfort film for everyone. However, I am choosing this film because I watched it all the time growing up, especially when I had to stay home sick from school (until Miracle came out.) So, this spot should be for any movie from your childhood that you’ve seen 1000 times and it takes you back to a particular point in time. I know this film back to front and don’t need to pay attention to watch it. There’s nothing particular about the movie that brings me comfort, it’s just about a movie I watched a lot as a kid. So, this will vary from person to person, but you should revisit a movie from your childhood.
Kona Brewing Co. – Wailua Wheat
Though this film takes place near Costa Rica, it was filmed in Hawaii. So, I chose a delicious Hawaiian beer. Kona is pretty widely known and this wheat beer is fantastic.
Amelie
I just only recently watched this film for the first time less than a year ago. This may be one of the most charming films I have ever seen. The basic premise is about a woman named Amelie going about her daily life doing overly nice things to everyone she meets. It’s like Pay It Forward, but better and more heartfelt. Not only will the premise absolutely warm your heart, but you’ll get lost in the gorgeously rich color. Every frame has more rich color than any Technicolor film ever. Also, the music is wonderful and charming and you can listen to the score on its own and it will help you escape for awhile.
Brasseries Kronenbourg – Kronenbourg 1664
A delicious light blonde brew that tastes even better when you pour it into a pint glass. It’s like all the flavors come alive, like this film ignites all of your senses at once.
Dazed and Confused
This film gives me double comfort. It is a film I have seen so many times I know it by heart. Also, it’s a great subgenre of movie called Mumblecore. It’s a movie about nothing; usually people hanging out, friends getting to know each other better, or nothing in particular happens and we just hang out with a group of people for a night, few days, or just some hours. There are no stakes, no anxiety, no really having to pay attention. You just get to hang out with some high schoolers on the last day of school in 1976. Though I didn’t grow up in the 70s, it makes me nostalgic for a simpler time. If you’re purely looking for a good time then this one is for you.
Pabst Brewing Co. – Lone Star Beer
A classic Texas beer for a classic Texas film. This beer will go down just as smooth as this film does.
Waves
The last type of comfort film is one that’ll give you a good cry. Not the films that break you down and leave you in pieces on the floor. Rather, these are films that can give you a therapeutic cry. Now, if you’ve seen this film, you know this movie will break you to pieces. But, that’s only the first part. The second part of the film puts you back together and fills you with a sense of hope. It washes over you like waves crashing onto a beach. It fills you with so many emotions and you will cry, but this film doesn’t leave you depressed. It’s about how love is what will keep us going. It’s a hopeful film which is something we could all use right now.

Perfect for those nice breezy nights on the beach, or a day drink while you fish at a lake.
