Many young children would try to pretend to be sick to avoid going to school. Unfortunately, some adults might try to do that, too, in order to not go to work. A sad fact is that, unfortunately, some people work only for the money. Money can definitely corrupt people, and that is one of the main themes of Billy Wilder’s classic comedy The Fortune Cookie.
A Toast!
This film features one of the best collaborations between the director Billy Wilder and its star, Jack Lemmon. Walter Matthau actually won an Oscar for his supporting role as Willie Gingrich, and that character’s name is obviously satirical because it directly deals with the unfortunate fact that greed can negatively impact people. The Fortune Cookie also features beautiful black-and-white production design, cinematography, and a highly original screenplay. The character named Sandy Hinkle also allowed the actress, Judi West, to have her film debut in this satirical romantic comedy.
Verdict
The Fortune Cookie is just as enjoyable as reading an uplifting fortune after breaking open a fortune cookie after eating meals in Asian restaurants.
