William Shakespeare has written some of the greatest dramas in the English language. Even though students oftentimes study his tragedies, like Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet, the Bard can still be humorous. Not all of his plays are even that serious (thankfully)! One of the funniest comedies that Shakespeare ever wrote is The Merry Wives of Windsor.
A Toast!
Despite a three-hour running time, this play and BBC adaptation is hilarious. The themes explored in this play are actually similar to themes that Jane Austen explored in her own writing. For example, the play deals with marriage, love, and social standing in Windsor, Berkshire. It is also worth noting that William Shakespeare wrote this play because Queen Elizabeth I commanded him to do so. It is actually fortunate that Shakespeare had to please her majesty because this play (and subsequent TV adaptation) is highly entertaining even though it utilizes humor to provide social commentary.

Please enjoy the misadventures of the roguish Falstaff as he seduces the merry wives of Windsor.
