Zacharias Kunuk burst on the international cinema scene back in 2000 with Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner, a film fully in the Inukitut language and featuring a fully indigenous cast. It felt bold and new not just in its setting, but in its storytelling
With Uiksaringitara: Wrong Husband, Kunuk once more returns to TIFF with a Arctic-set film immersed in Inuit mythology. An Inuit community 4,000 years ago goes through the motions of daily life, particularly a young boy and girl who are destined to marry, but this a world that also features supernatural danger and magic.
A Toast
Here Kunuk and his able cast and crew depict a fascinating hunter-gatherer culture that’s persisted for millennia. The more fantastical, allegorical story and characters have been passed down through oral traditions that may well span all the way back to the 4,000 year old setting of the film, or even further, just as many of the here lovingly rendered details of daily life have.
This is a people that lives in harmony with the natural world, but sickness and death will always occur, though, and stories have always been our way to engage with that inevitable fact of life. Love is another one of those universal truths, and manufacturing ways to keep lovers apart has been a instigator of dramatic tension likely as long as we’ve found a place for ourselves in the stories we tell.

The story speeds along at first- it can be hard to get your bearings on relationships and how the mystical elements work exactly. When you do get a handle on it, it’s pretty straightforward, though (and all comes together in the end).
