The Sound of Music remains a landmark in film history. Julie Andrews starred in that film right after collaborating with Walt Disney in Mary Poppins (1964). Surprisingly, Julie Andrews did NOT win the Academy Award for playing Maria von Trapp! That was because a different “Julie” claimed Oscar gold that same year. Julie Christie gave the performance of a lifetime in the black-and-white drama entitled, Darling.
A Toast!
Julie Christie really did deliver an amazing performance! Her role as Diana Scott is a richly complex protagonist. She also wears very beautiful outfits, especially sumptuously seductive gowns. The screenplay is also very compelling even though this film is strictly for adults.
Verdict
Julie Andrews might have sung her heart out in The Sound of Music, but Julie Christie is truly an “Oscar darling” (pun intended).
