I taught English for a couple of years in Korea, including in the small island town of Sanyang. While only 30 minutes away by bus, it was another world from the already not terribly big city of Tongyeong where I lived and my principal school was located.
The World Before follows a teen girl living on a small island that looks remarkably similar to my Samyang. When an old schoolmate returns after five years away, she finds it hard to stay away.
A Toast
Writer/Director Yoon Dan-bi is content to let our understanding of these characters and their relationships unfold through observation and naturalistic conversation. It’s not slow cinema so much as considered cinema, with no real villains and little overt drama. Rather this is a story of humans connecting as they can, from the two teens feeling out an attraction neither can be sure is mutual to a scene where the boy bonds with a foreign worker through only a few shared words and gestures.
There are not a lot of places that make a cinematographer’s job as easy as the lush and shimmering archipelagoes off of Korea’s southern coast. Magic hour and the sunsets there are quite literally something else. It’s easy to get sucked into the slower, steadier rhythms of the rural life and landscapes on display here.
Through her characters here, and especially her young girl protagonist, Yoon Dan-bi shows she’s in touch with her young self. This may or may not be autobiographical, but the emotions of a teen with her first stirrings of attraction to the other sex, or perhaps to someone specific of the other sex, are universal. Yoon proves particularly sensitive to the words we don’t say, especially when we it’s exactly the time we should say them.
Beer Two
These characters are teenagers and recognizable human beings, which means they make decisions you cringe to watch at times.
Verdict
The World Before is a delicately told coming of age story for a teen girl experiencing the pangs of first love.
