When I reached out to ask to review this film, the publicist told me “This film is too cool for the world.” She wasn’t wrong.
JUNK WORLD tells the story of summit between humans and cloned humanoid slaves called “mulligans” that long ago rebelled and won their freedom. Their uneasy peace is ruptured by an attack, the escape from which we see played over again and again from different perspectives (and universes).
A Toast
JUNK WORLD is the latest stop-motion extravaganza from Takahide Hori, whose Junk Head universe now spans two features and a short. Here he levels up his sci-fi world-building and uniquely twisted sense of humor. This is impressively detailed world-building (with a little peek into the immense amount of work that must have gone into it during the credits). I hadn’t seen this one’s predecessor, but Hori brings you up to speed impressively fast, so don’t worry about that.
Hori creates an utter glut of nightmarish yet at times oddly cute mutated and cloned creatures to inhabit this strange world, a regular Dante’s Inferno for his characters to traverse. The film’s structure is extremely interesting (and probably cleverly economical with the sets and such), as it replays the events of the film from start from a different POV midway through not once, but several times, even incorporating different universes in which life evolves according to each character’s particular interests and motivations to wildly differing effect. What ties everything together is an extremely goofy and winningly dark sense of humor and just the right dose of heart to make you empathize with this bizarre-looking and bizarre-acting motley crew.

Whatever happens, you really just have to roll with it. Will it give you nightmares? Your subconscious is not trying hard enough if it doesn’t.
Verdict
JUNK WORLD is multiversal stop-motion sci-fi extravaganza with some of the most horrifying and hilarious things you’ll see on screen this year.
