Stephen Sondheim contributed greatly to stage and cinematic musicals. In fact, as of 2020, many modern audiences know him for West Side Story (1961) and Into the Woods (2014). Unfortunately, not all of his musicals radiate on the silver screen, and an (in)famous example is A Little Night Music.

First of all, this film won an Academy Award for its musical score, and also received a nomination for its costume design.

Unfortunately, Elizabeth Taylor delivers a rather mediocre performance in this film.

Finally, this film continues to divide critics and general audiences.
Verdict
“A little night music” might help people sleep, but this film could potentially upset musical theater fans.
