Romantic comedies have sometimes been criticized for being a bit too…”sappy.” Indeed, some people would consider compelling love stories to be nothing more than trite entertainment. Nevertheless, some of the best films ever made are undeniably romantic, and one of the best is A Touch of Class.
A Toast!
Starring George Segal and Glenda Jackson as a pair of clandestine lovers, this is simply one of the best love stories ever captured on film. Melvin Frank both wrote and directed this sweepingly modern tale. The score and Oscar-nominated song “All That Love Went to Waste” help add musicality to this romantic comedy. George Segal definitely deserved his Golden Globe victory for this film even though he failed to acquire an Oscar nomination for that same role. It is also nice that he diversified his work outside of gritty dramas, especially since he played “Nick” in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. Glenda Jackson is truly a phenomenal actress in both this film and Women in Love. Glenda Jackson surely knows how to play romantic leads!
Verdict
This film really does have “a touch of class” (pun intended)!
