One of the more fun and definitely more out there worldwide action franchises to debut in the last few years was Alienoid, a South Korean sci-fi/time travel action comedy extravaganza that ended on one hell of a cliffhanger when it debuted back in 2022. Well, I’m happy to report that the wait to see what happens is over as of this week.
Alienoid 2: Return to the Future picks up right where Alienoid left off- the fate of the present-day world rests on a couple of young but special people as they hold the keys to preventing an alien intelligence from terraforming the Earth to its own species’ standards. I won’t go more into the plot because man, there’s a lot of it, but most of our favorite characters return to see an end to their stories.
A Toast
As with its predecessor, Alienoid 2: Return to the Future is chock full of fun, highly imaginative action sequences spread across different time periods and with a bevy of different weapons and technologies all mish-mashed into one heck of a spectacle.
The generally pretty awesome special effects bolster that all the more, particularly when we start entering some climactic and hugely scaled battles- one train crash near the finale is as impressive a scene of destruction as I’ve seen so far this young year.
It’s also all infused with humor and admirably grotesque at times, like Venom meets Japanese tentacle… niche interests. No matter who you are, you won’t be bored.
Beer Two
This will be a feature and not a bug for many, but this movie is very, deeply goofy, perhaps even more so than the first. For good and ill, the comic relief characters from before have leapt to the fore, with many of the leads taking a backseat. It’s hard to feel their peril, or get all that worked up about it even if it is serious.
Beer Three
This sequel piles on plots, timelines, and twists until it’s a big hard to know what’s going on even if you’re intimately familiar with the first film- so I’d say it’s kind of a must to rewatch it before giving this one a try.
Verdict
Alienoid: Return to the Future isn’t without its flaws, but wraps up its franchise story with a humorous, action-packed finale.
