So, it turns out that even the Annecy International Film Festival has a Midnight Section. What, do you ask, makes the Midnight Section of a animation film festival? Behold.
Spermageddon is about a society of proud sperm who have been eagerly awaiting their apocalypse – the first time their Klingon-speaking teen host has sex. A weekend at the lake among friends looks like it’s going to be it.
A Toast
This is a Finnish genre film, so you can rest assured that Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow, Violent Night) will be involved. Instead of the old humorous hyperviolence, though, here he’s co-directed (alongside Rasmus A. Sivertsen) a blend of sex and humor (more common bedfellows, I suppose).
This creative team demonstrates total commitment to the bit. Think Pixar’s Inside Out, but for all of the biological functions its soon to be teenager-featuring sequel is not going to want anything to do with. Well, fret not, this movie here has you covered in full sophomoric, scatological (and yes, humorous) detail.
A last tip of the glass to how refreshingly sex positive a film this is. While the biological functions are as in your face as you could ever want, there’s a refreshing sweetness about how this tentative teen couple interact and grow their relationship together.
Beer Two
Like Sausage Party before it, it’s so committed to shocking that it doesn’t know when to take a break. Of course, if you loved Sausage Party or its ilk, then this is for you, but if you started to feel worn down by all the grossness for grossness sake, even 79 minutes of this will feel long.
Beer Three
It’s also a musical. Again, for some this will be a feature, and for others like me, it’ll be a bug.
Verdict
Spermageddon is a gloriously profane anti-Pixar film about all of those bodily processes they’ll never, ever touch.
