Sexual violence is a societal disease that degrades everyone exposed to it, even those on the periphery of the crime, those who must decide what to believe.
Rose (Marie Bloching) has just moved into her brother’s apartment while she seeks to get back on her feet from some unspecified setback. They’re incredibly close, but when she awakens one night to overhear he’s brought someone home. Later, she gets a court summons to testify- he’s been accused of rape, and she’s the only witness, although she doesn’t think she knows what exactly she did hear or see.
A Toast
Debut director Sara Miro Fischer takes her time at the beginning of the film, focusing on really establishing the close family and friend relationships that will be rocked by the rape accusation against Rose’s brother. These people and their interactions feel warm and real, which makes it all the more jarring when the crime is reported.
It’s Rose who essentially the entire film unfolds from the perspective of, though, and Bloching puts on an actor’s showcase. Fischer often focuses on her face in close-ups, especially when she’s in emotionally difficult situations like when giving her testimony. She sells a complex mix of emotions with just a small expression change or two- as anyone would, she wants to believe her brother didn’t, couldn’t have done this, that maybe it was just two people remembering a consensual encounter drastically differently.
The more she comes to believe the contrary, though, the more she spirals. How does one come to terms with such a thing, and what is one’s obligation towards those she loves against that of justice and truth?
Beer Two
The psychosexual sex scene where she tries a little mixing of titillation and violence herself was a bit much. I understand the intent- her trying to understand him in the most fucked up way possible- but it didn’t ring true to the character.
Verdict
The Good Sister is a knotty and complex story about trying to coming to terms with the fact a loved one may have done something horrible.
