You can’t review music without having a love for it and a deep appreciation for it. Even something you may not necessarily feel anything for, there’s always something you can find to appreciate.
That’s the case here with Black Dog String Quartet’s A Thousand Times Brighter. Listening to it intently, you can tell immediately the quartet are amazing classical musicians. The violin and cello are celebrated here, up front and there’s plenty of it in each track. Paired with vocals that as close to heavenly sounding, you have an album that has promise.
But throughout its run, the tracks just begin to sound similar to one another, there’s nothing that pops out at you, and running at under an hour, the album just seems to go on endlessly. For me, I want an album making me want to hear more; the worse part of any good album should always be when it’s over. I can’t honestly say I felt this way when the album came to an end.
For the classical music enthusiast, you may well hear a gem of an album. But for the rest of us, the album will be better enjoyed with four beers at the ready.
