Movie Review
Some would consider Katharine Hepburn to be the greatest actress of all time (even greater than Meryl Streep). Because of her impressive filmography and four Academy Award victories, it might be shocking that critics once labeled her as “box office poison.” That was certainly the case when she starred in the 1938 screwball comedy Bringing Up Baby (1938).
A Toast!
First of all, this film does have its comedic moments. It has a lot of humor that characterized the 1930s, especially famous funny performers like Laurel and Hardy. Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn both share great chemistry during all of their scenes together, which is no wonder why both of them would eventually have careers that would last for decades.
Beer Two
Unfortunately, despite all of the funny moments, a lot of that humor is nonsensical. It appears as if Susan (Hepburn) wants to torture David (Grant) just because she “likes” him. The film is definitely funny, but the humor is almost like a 1930s version of Jackass, which has been made (in)famously by Johnny Knoxville. *Remember = It is okay if a girl likes a guy, but making the man’s life miserable is not the right way to enter a relationship with someone.*
Verdict
The title of this film might be Bringing Up Baby, but an alternative title could be, Katharine Hepburn Gone Wild.
