Casey Affleck is a psychiatrist and a teacher at a university in Washington (this was definitely filmed in Canada). His wife (Michelle Monaghan) was driving with their son one night and they’re hit by another car and their son is killed. While dealing with the aftermath their daughter is expelled from school for doing coke in class. Also, one of Casey’s patients is distraught after her friend dies and she commits suicide. Then her brother shows up and begins to terrorize Casey and his family.
A Toast
Uh… There’s not really a lot I liked about this film. The production design looks great. Whatever house they got to film at sure is nice to look at. Wherever they are in Canada is also gorgeous to look at. The other thing I liked is Sam Claflin’s performance as Jared Flagg. It is way over the top but at least he’s doing something other than sleepwalking through the film. Casey begins the film by doing a small character trait that I thought was going to carry through the film. I thought he was creating a subtle nuanced performance. But he gives that up early on and seems to stop caring like everyone else, except Sam Claflin.
Beer Two
Like I said, everyone in this film except for Sam Claflin seems to be sleepwalking through the film. There’s nothing worse than watching people who seem to either not want to be there or are indifferent to being in the film. I know Casey and Michelle are capable of better performances, so I can only chalk it up to laziness. Even with a poor director good actors can rise above terrible surroundings. Unless they just do not want to.
Beer Three
Not only does every character seem to be indifferent to everything happening, but I also do not understand anyone’s motives. I think it’s an issue of poor script and poor editing. There’s flashbacks that happen and make you wonder why we didn’t see more of that. It would’ve helped us to understand what Michelle’s character was going though. Also, I don’t know if the daughter was supposed to be in college or high school, but she full on makes out with Sam Claflin’s Jared and it is really gross. They say she was kicked out of boarding school, which to me means high school. Am I wrong? Either way it is gross to watch.
Beer Four
As to my previous grievance, I am going to chalk it up to poor editing because this film moves at a snail’s pace. It is only 105 minutes, but I checked my watch 3 times before it reached the hour mark. Then another three times in the final 45 minutes. Lord, is this a drag to watch.
Beer Five
Lastly and maybe most criminal is how predictable this film is. There are movies that I have enjoyed even though I figured them out; Seven and Searching are two that come to mind. However, when you combine the fact that this is so boring and it decides to not take any sharp turns and instead drive you down a straight road, you really want to jump out of the car at the end of the ride. I promise you’ll figure this one out in the first 10 minutes.
Beer Six
The intersection where Michelle and her son are hit is a three way. They are T-Boned while turning, but when they are hit, they are not turning. She is just sitting in the middle of the road for no reason. You see the crash twice, and twice the car is not moving and just sitting in the intersection. Can you really be that lazy? Come on!!!
Verdict
What could’ve been a decent or even fun thriller just falls flat and drags you across a floor of Legos extremely slowly.
