Extraction (2020) Movie Drinking Game
Take a Drink: to kick-start the thrill you will experience.
Do a Shot: to accompany the rich kids at the pub.
Do a Shot: as you see the rich kids attacked. Ovi Mahajan (Rudhraksh Jaiswal) is kidnapped and his friend is shot dead. (You are taken aback. You realize not everything is great for the rich kids.)
Refrain from a Drink: until you see Ovi Mahajan Sr. (Pankaj Tripathi). Unfortunately, he appears and disappears. The whole movie is about extracting his kidnapped son, but Ovi Mahajan Sr. appears just once. Given his spectacular performances, we long for him but he hardly has a screen presence.
Resume with a Drink: only when you come to those last 12 minutes long action sequence in the movie.

In 2014 Ande Parks, the Russo brothers, Fernando Leon Gonzalez, and Eric Skillman published a comic book titled, Ciudad. The script of the book was ready in 2010, which means it has taken a decade for the movie adaptation of the comic book to be produced. Extraction, directed by Sam Hargrave, is a thriller based on this comic book.
Ovi Mahajan Sr. is a drug lord in India who is imprisoned. His son is kidnapped by the drug lord Amir Asif from Dhaka, Bangladesh, who wants ransom for him. But the Indian gangster orders his associate Saju Rav (Randeep Hooda) to search for and extract his son, which he must do, or else… Saju Rav employs Nik Khan (Golshifteh Farahani) for the task. She takes the help of former Australian soldier in the mission of extracting Ovi Mahajan. The movie revolves around this process of extraction. The divergence between Saju Rav’s team and Khan’s team, and the conflict and internal propaganda of the drug mafia lords both from India and Bangladesh is a spectacle to watch.
A Toast
Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) assisting Nik Khan is the subject of every frame afterwards, practically. Although you have almost nothing but him on screen, the performance he delivers is worth watching. From when he travels to the past in a flashback until he is wounded and shot, he does everything with great panache.
Ovi Mahajan emotes perfectly, justifying his character as vulnerable, scared, rejected, and yearning for love. His feeling of rejection and fear of the uncertain future is seen as he says, “I am like a package, then, in brown paper.” His defenselessness is portrayed through descriptions of him like, ‘walking corpse,’ and ‘more like a thing than a person.’ Nevertheless, Tyler Rake, after having realized the pain Ovi must be going through, decides to do everything possible to take Ovi back home through the streets of a Dhaka not painted with colour, but rather a gloomy, conflicted, and stunted look.
Beer Two
The director has failed to emphasize the psyche of Tyler Rake, although the flashbacks make it evident. The story could have been developed alongside the development of the individual characters. The life of the drug mafia both in India and Bangladesh needed more exploration.
Beer Three
Although the stunts were worth the watch, the last 12 minute long car and foot chase, and the continuous sounds of bombing and shooting, were a pain to watch and jarring to the ears.
Verdict
I expected Tyler Rake to save more than one kidnapped, trafficked, and enslaved child in Dhaka. The children of the streets of Dhaka were undoubtedly tortured and fed with gangster narrative and they actually needed a saviour. Children are a gift and they ought to be taken care of as persons and not things.
