I’m not sure what to make of Heavenly Trip’s EP, Pumpkin Man. It’s loud for sure, fast definitely, and we did mention it’s loud, right? As the band describes it, the EP is aggressive and it’s inspired by the dangers of rock and roll, with each of the four songs about real life and tragedy. Wow! I had no idea I had to wear a seatbelt when I listened to rock and roll music.
Things get off to a heavy, drum-beating start on the title track “Pumpkin Man.” On “Vivid Dreams”, things begin on a spacey note, but then turns dangerous as the lead singer belts out continuously, “We sold our souls to rock and roll. Anarchy is all we know.” “Systematic” and “Arturo Huizer” follow different musical paths, but have high, energetic guitar riffs and pounding drumming, trademarks for industrial bands such as Heavenly Trip. You really need to appreciate the sound of industrial and be devoted to the genre, otherwise you just get lost trying to decipher much of what is being said. Heavenly Trip, on a personal level, may not be what’s on my radar musically, but if you embrace dangerous elements to your music, Pumpkin Man is an EP to pick up.
