Some of the best films are historical epics. For example, Victor Fleming helped direct Vivien Leigh as she portrayed Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind. Even though that film focused upon American history, Fleming also contributed to films involving world history. Many students learn about Joan of Arc when learning about French history, and Ingrid Bergman brought that figure to life in the 1948 drama that bears her name.
A Toast!
First of all, this film is very captivating. The cinematography beautifully captures Joan of Arc’s impact upon French society. Not only that, but the acting from Ingrid Bergman and José Ferrer is incredible. It is fortunate that Walter Wagner earned an Honorary Award from the Academy because of how his film honors the legacy of Joan of Arc.

Victor Fleming really knows how to direct his leading ladies!
