Exciting, thrilling, anthemic, powerful are some of the words to describe Lemon Knife’s fourth release, Ignite!. Mia Blixt-Shehan and John Retterer-Moore are on to something here; Ignite! features stellar tracks, excellent musicianship, and brings you back to an era when the music was loud, unpolished, and was really kicking!
The opening track “Ignite!” starts things off like a bomb. Mia’s voice is what stood out for me, a very sweet sounding voice but it combines so, so well with her shredder guitar skills. John’s drumming is loud, hard, and hard to ignore because it’s that’s good. Not just on “Ignite!” but on everything other track.
“Kirkwald In A Day” is a soft and subtle early 2000s influenced track; think PJ Harvey’s “Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea”, while “Quarterly Pursuit” has more of a 90s “Exile From Guyville” vibe.
“Haircut” is almost four minutes of hard rock jamming, the only true anthemic track on Ignite!. The buzzing guitar and solid drumming are turned up a notch and really shows you how well Lemon Knife can really rock their tools of trade.
With a runtime of under an hour, Ignite! packs a lot of musical punching power. Enjoy this with two beers. It’s the kind of album one can really say doesn’t sound like anything else . . . in the mainstream at least. Ignite! is just explosive.
