Little Women has an iconic title. Despite the adjective “little,” the March sisters have stood the test of time as an enduring family in American literature. Indeed, the tale of these four sisters growing up during the Civil War era is undeniably timeless. As of 2020, the most recent adaptation is the 2019 version that Greta Gerwig directed. Nevertheless, the one that premiered in 1949 is uniquely original.
A Toast!
This film is a visual marvel! In fact, the film won an Academy Award for its art direction (nowadays known as “production design”), and has captivating cinematography. Furthermore, this film features four of the greatest actresses that Hollywood has ever known, and they are: Elizabeth Taylor as “Amy,” Janet Leigh as “Meg,” Margaret O’Brien as “Beth,” and June Allyson as “Jo.” The film captures the brilliance of Louisa May Alcott’s seminal story via romantic Technicolor. This is one of the most beautiful adaptations of that classic narrative!
Verdict
Greta Gerwig might have written her screenplay in response to the #MeToo movement, but this film is still a gorgeous family drama.
