Every year Slamdance provides a fascinating counterprogramming against the Sundance Film Festival for an extremely reasonable fee. It’s slate is a bit more “out there”, but that’s a lot of its charm. One of the flicks that caught my eye, but that I failed to watch as quickly as I should have, is definitely “out there”- I present to you, Mad Cats.
How to describe the plot? A trailer-dwelling sad-sack is forced to team up with a homeless man and a mysterious stranger to defeat a cult of cat-people to save his brother and secure the sacred catnip of Bastet before the cats can consume it and gain special powers. Also, everyone, especially the cats, have guns.
A Toast
Right from the opening drone shot, it’s clear that this creative team is going to make as much as they can from a clearly modest budget. They have a deeply bizarre story they want to tell, and nothing is going to stand in the way of it. The cat puns and call-outs never get old, and the action is fun and often funny. You’re going along for a ride with the characters and strange situations they find themselves in, but the delivery makes it easy and enjoyable to do so.
Also, the cat breeder commercial is a hoot.
Beer Two
Just so you know what you’re getting in for, this is a deeply, committedly silly film. There is so much goofy screaming and slapstick antics, so you best be prepared for them.
Beer Three
Some of the action and effects may play a bit direct to video, even when it doesn’t appear they’re necessarily going for that, but either way I thought they added a fun touch.
Verdict
Mad Cats is an oddity about a ne’er-do-well Japanese man battling a bunch of evil evolved cat people, and is as fun as that logline suggests.
