The haunting legacies of warfare have captured the imaginations of people years after those wars began. Wartime dramas are a popular film genre, and have received recognition for their gritty realism. Many modern cinephiles admire films like Braveheart (1995) and Saving Private Ryan (1998), but some of the best films ever made might not be common knowledge. Casablanca is one of the most famous romances from the 1940s, but other films from that decade are not as well-known. One of the best examples is Mrs. Miniver.
A Toast!
The recipient of six Academy Awards, including “Best Picture,” this is definitely one of the best wartime dramas ever produced. Greer Garson, Teresa Wright, and William Wyler all received Oscars for their contributions to this film. The screenplay is a brilliant adaptation of the book by Jan Struther, especially since four writers collaborated on the script. This drama is also visually stunning thanks to the camerawork of Joseph Ruttenberg.
Verdict
World War II remains one of the darkest times in world history, but at least this cinematic masterpiece emerged from the chaos and confusion of that depressing era.
