A lot of films released in 1939 were sweeping romances. For example, Gone with the Wind met critical acclaim almost instantly. Additionally, Wuthering Heights brought to life the incredibly passionate novel of the same time. In terms of originality, Ninotchka could serve as the most off-beat romance released during that golden year in Hollywood history.
A Toast!
Nominated for four Academy Awards, this is a compelling romantic drama. First of all, Greta Garbo delivers one of her best performances in this film. Furthermore, the screenplay does justice to the original story by Melchior Lengyel. Finally, this film definitely deserved its “Best Picture” Oscar nomination.
Verdict
This lighthearted comedy is almost like the comedic opposite of the intensely dramatic film Gone with the Wind.
