A fundamental fact is that it is impossible to change the past. Nevertheless, guilt, shame, and regret can hinder people from moving on. Another depressing truth is that everyone will die eventually. Films can teach audiences about the beauty of life itself despite the bleakness that plagues an ordinary existence. That is why Ordinary People remains one of the best dramatic films ever produced.
A Toast!
Based on the novel by Judith Guest, this is a very dark drama that can be very depressing. Despite such negativity, this film still offers hope because it emphasizes how life really does go on. Timothy Hutton deserved his Oscar for his supporting role as the younger son of an affluent family beset by tragedy. The entire cast delivers powerful performances thanks to Alvin Sargent’s compelling screenplay and Robert Redford’s masterful direction. Robert Redford’s directorial debut truly remains a timeless masterpiece.
Verdict
The title of the tragic Ordinary People is a bit deceptive because this really is no ordinary motion picture (pun intended).
