The terrible legacy of Indian Boarding Schools feels as if it is just now being faced in recent years, in both the United States and Canada.
Remaining Native tells a story of contending with that legacy in a unique way, following 17-year-old long-distance runner Ku Stevens, who seeks to use his talent to leave his Nevada Yerington Paiute Reservation and go to the University of Oregon.
A Toast
From the beginning, this film and Ku himself draw parallels between his experiences as a young Native American track star and his familial and cultural history of Indian Boarding Schools, in particular his grandfather, who tried to escape one by running away into the wilderness.
Running and perseverance is clearly in his blood- and the more he learns the more interested he becomes in activism as well as running, eventually finding a way to tie them together in a Remembrance Run that retraces the 50-mile escape route of his grandfather.
The cinematography is fitting to the natural splendor of the desert landscapes, and it’s a well-edited documentary.

Beer Two
With so much hinging on his dreams to become a collegiate runner, and particularly at one school, the film could have done with more detail as to how college recruitment works in this sport and how he was able to secure his place despite all odds.
Verdict
Remaining Native is an inspirational documentary about a Native American high school track star honoring his ancestral legacy.
