A fundamental fact is that the careers of writers change as time passes. Usually, writing becomes more sophisticated when writers practice their craft. That truth applies to William Shakespeare as well. His earlier plays are obviously different from his later works, yet everything he wrote remains special. One of Shakespeare’s earliest and most iconic plays is The Comedy of Errors.
A Toast!
The title is a bit self-explanatory, but the play (and this BBC production) is still highly entertaining. The plot is very simple, but that actually helps make it a timeless comedic farce. There is also quite a bit of mature humor in this production (but there will be no major spoilers in this review). This play could really be William Shakespeare’s comedic masterpiece.
Verdict
Shakespeare in Love (1998) might have been advertised as “a truly romantic comedy of errors,” but nothing beats the original (usually). And of course, the puns are intended because Shakespeare is famous for his bawdy language!
