Asian-Americans have a unique place in cinematic history. Very few Asians have won Academy Awards, and Caucasians have notoriously portrayed Asian characters in a somewhat offensive manner. Nevertheless, Hollywood has made an effort to depict differing races respectively, especially in 2020. One of the best novels about the Asian-American experience is The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck. The subsequent film adaptation is also a timeless classic.
A Toast!
Starring Paul Muni and Luise Rainer, this film is truly a black-and-white masterpiece. Despite being a white actress, Luise Rainer definitely deserved the Academy Award for playing the stoic heroine, O-Lan. The film also features brilliant cinematography and very precise film editing. This film could really be Sidney Franklin’s magnum opus even though he received his only Oscar nomination for this particular directorial effort.
Verdict
Cultural representation has come a long way despite the time it took to demystify Asian culture as a foreign entity.
