First of all, only some fathers are like their sons. That statement debunks the classic cliché, “Like father, like son.” Furthermore, part of maturing into adults sometimes involves going against parental figures. Furthermore, the contrasts that parents have with their children might create drama. That is actually part of the reason why The Great Santini is a classic in its own right.
A Toast!
Since this film depicts the relationship between a father and his son, the drama is very raw. Additionally, Robert Duvall and Michael O’Keefe both earned Oscar nominations for their performances. Finally, this film is a major triumph from writer and director Lewis John Carlino.
Verdict
Ultimately, this film is much more than a simple adaptation of the novel by Pat Conroy.
