Florenz Ziegfeld Jr. was one of the best people in the entertainment business. In fact, his “Ziegfeld Follies” changed the nature of stage revues. Because of his contributions, it is no surprise that Hollywood would honor his legacy. That is what they did with the release of The Great Ziegfeld in 1936.
A Toast!
The winner of three Academy Awards, this “Best Picture” winner is definitely one of the greatest films of all time. Additionally, Louise Rainer won her first Academy Award for her leading performance as “Anna Held.” Interestingly, the film also received an Oscar for its dance sequence entitled, “A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody.” Finally, this film is one of the most vibrant and beautiful biopics ever produced.
Verdict
Walter Pidgeon might have played Florenz Ziegfeld in Funny Girl (1968), but The Great Ziegfeld truly does honor his greatness (pun intended)!
