Director Nicolas Pereda has a reputation for making idiosyncratic blends of documentary and drama in his examinations of the everyday lives Mexicans across different classes.
Everything Else is Noise follows Rosa, a female composer who sits for a TV interview in the apartment of her fellow musician friend Teresa, only for it to keep being derailed.
A Toast
Pereda’s opening, in which a traffic snarl plays out soundtracked by classical music played by cello, is a surprisingly droll introduction to the tone he’ll submersing us in for the duration of his short but endearingly shaggy film. We are next dropped into a passive aggressive conversation between Teresa, the presumable cellist who was soundtracking that scene, with her downstairs neighbor where he asks her not to “make noise” in the mornings.
Pereda has created a film obsessed with the senses and the ambient environment’s affect on them, underscored by the constant distractions the TV interview undergoes- dogs barking, apparently uncommon except for today power outages- and so time is passed via conversation, like Teresa’s expounding on her sense of smell, or the documentarian’s feature film idea, which also sounds boring, amusingly.
As Teresa’s headstrong daughter Luisa starts to interject in these conversations and the interview itself, it becomes clear that “it’s all composer!” Yes, all of the ladies here compose music, as does Teresa’s husband and Luisa’s father we eventually learn. We do begin to get more of an idea of how this whole family of composers functions after the interview, particularly the friction between the daughter and father. One gets the idea he’s too blinded by his own career to more than acknowledge his wife and daughter’s, which introduces perhaps the only non-noise-related drama in the film just in time to close it.
Beer Two
I’m sure you’ll be surprised to hear, but this film isn’t going to be for everyone. The almost perverse lack of incident is entirely the point and a source of unexpected pleasures- just know what you’re getting into.
Verdict
Everything Else is Noise is a low-key yet consistently droll film about music, filmmaking, and the banality of everyday life.
