Some of the best films made in America are about America. Films have oftentimes portrayed American heroes who have directly impacted American society. Those same motion pictures honor those people by leaving a lasting impression upon American culture, and Yankee Doodle Dandy definitely does that!
A Toast!
First of all, James Cagney definitely deserved his Academy Award for authentically portraying George M. Cohan. Besides that amazing performance, the screenplay features some of the most famous lines in cinematic history. The music is also a joy to the ears even though it has been years since its theatrical debut (as of 2020). This is truly a timeless musical that can remind viewers that “The American Dream” is still valid despite its beguiling nature.
Verdict
This “Best Picture” nominee is very dandy indeed (pun intended)!
