Within the history of theater, some modern plays depicted bizarre situations. That led to the notion of “Theater of the Absurd.” One of the most (in)famous examples is Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Despite such randomness, sometimes unusual situations result in hilarity. A comedic comedy that has stood the test of time in theater and on film is California Suite.
A Toast!
First of all, this film is absolutely hilarious! It is fortunate to know that Neil Simon was a master of modern comedies. Furthermore, this film features an all-star cast that includes Sir Michael Caine, Alan Alda, and Jane Fonda. Perhaps the best part of this film is Maggie Smith’s performance as “Diana Barrie,” a role that earned her both a Golden Globe nomination and an Oscar statuette.
Beer Two
Just like other modern comedies, some of the humor is a bit risqué, and sometimes even a bit scandalous.
Verdict
Please do enjoy “the best two-hour vacation in town” (a tagline that helped promote this motion picture)!
