Another film festival, and particularly Cannes, trope is the story of youth living on the edge of society, just trying to make ends meet, to possibly build enough to get out of their present circumstances.
Meteors which tells the story of two such French friends, one working part-time at Burger King, the other hustling cash where he can. A stupid night of low-to-midlevel crime puts them both on probation, needing to get full-time work and prove some stability to the court.
A Toast
My first impression of this film was that its star, Paul Kircher, sure looked familiar. It turns out he’s the brother of one Samuel Kircher, who I just watched in his own commanding Cannes turn in Wild Foxes (and both are the sons of Jerome Kircher and Irene Jacob- talk about an acting dynasty).
He’s superb as a young man too easily drawn into the antics of his best friend and roommate who is an absolute whirlwind of bad decision-making (Idir Azougli, who is the spitting image of Fred Hechinger, delivers a magnetic, tragic performance of his own). As he struggles not to get dragged down, too, while trying to balance his deep care for a man who is literally killing himself with his drinking and drug-taking, he undergoes his own struggle for identity and drawing limits for himself. This is a movie that examines self-destruction in many forms. It’s hard to get out of a spiral when you’re trying to do it with someone who doesn’t want to, won’t, likely can’t.
Beer Two
Like Mika, you may start to get exasperated with how resolutely Dan fails to operate in his own best interests. For me, though, Mika was almost as frustrating- neither of these guys engenders a lot of hope.
Verdict
Meteors is a sometimes frustrating, often heartbreaking story of two friends trying to get their lives together as best they can.
