The last time Gaspar Noe had a movie about climaxes…
Insert: Punchline.
Nobody gets any pleasure from Climax– not any but the most fleeting with the worst of tradeoffs. A multicultural troupe of dancers throws an after party in a remote rehearsal location. What was pretty normal fun becomes something far more sinister when it becomes clear that someone dosed the punch with LSD.
A Toast
Noe has ideas, man, he always has ideas. The opening features a striking tracking shot that flips upside down, mirrored later in the film when hell really breaks loose. The credits are interspersed throughout the film, including the end credits all rolling right at the beginning. The production itself took place in a scant 15 days, and nearly all of the actors’ dialogue and actions were improvised. This is despite the technically rigorous control necessary to pull off maneuvers like his longest take (42 minutes!).
The story ultimately is simple and fairly linear (and based on a true story, apparently), but the way he frames it and moves it along is nightmarish. When the shit hits the fan, it’s like 60 minutes of those crazy last 10 minutes or so of Suspiria- unchecked hedonism becomes something twisted and evil and revealing of the real people behind the facades we all throw up. There’s perhaps also some political symbolism of the increasingly fervently melting pot of France here.
Beer Two
However, if you try and track the metaphor through the film, it doesn’t make as much sense- all the young, hot, across the spectrum of sexuality people going insane and the flag they find “creepy” more or less is the whole of it.
In the end you come away with style and shock over substance, perhaps not as much as in previous efforts, but really the same ‘ol Gaspar.
Verdict
Climax is another Gaspar Noe provocation, although one that sees him trying out something new production-wise, yielding similar results for both good and ill.
