French cheese has a certain mystique to it, one that conjures up visions of white tablecloths and expensive wines. But have you considered the cheesemakers?
Holy Cow does, or at least one young man who’s thrust into adulthood when his father passes, and resolves to win the prestigious Comte cheese competition as a way out of his and his young sister’s uncertain prospects.
A Toast
As you’d hope from a profile of life in pastoral France, this film is beautifully shot, bucolic, and attuned to the lifestyles of its populace in a way that reveals the particularities of the region and the similarities that tie together rural folk across the globe. To the former, the traditional copper pot cheesemaking process is fascinating in itself, as is the weird dirt-track stock car race in which rolling your vehicle seems to be the point.
The characters feel true to life in their behaviors and interactions- a testament to both the acting and casting of predominantly non-professional actors. The chemistry among the group is palpable, and makes the film an ode to found families and the magnetic stirrings of young love.
Beer Two
The film may be a bit convenient in its denouement (although not in the way you’d think), but it’s hard not to root for it anyway.
Verdict
Holy Cow is a drama about a changing way of life set in rural France with great empathy towards those it portrays.
